Installing with Exchange v5.5

This second generation (G2) of Praetor was developed with Exchange 200x in mind and not the older v5.x as was the case with the Praetor v1.5 that G2 replaces.  In spite of this, Praetor will work to filter email for Exchange v5.5 by installing it onto a standalone Windows 2000 or XP machine.

Once installed and Praetor G2 has been configured, there are two items to note.

1.

The Internet Mail Service (IMS) of Exchange v5.5 does not have 8BITMIME support which allows for transmission of 8-bit data.  Praetor G2 uses IIS SMTP server which does support this feature by default so you will need to disable this in IIS.  Without 8BITMIME disabled, your Exchange v5.5 will not be able to receive messages from Praetor G2.

Read the Microsoft Knowledge Base article #262168 with instructions on how to disable this in IIS SMTP Server used by Praetor G2.

2.

While Praetor G2 is ready to begin filtering inbound mail items from the Internet, your Exchange 5.5 server sends outbound mail directly so Praetor will not see that traffic.  In order to enable Praetor to filter outbound messages, it is necessary to re-route all outgoing mail back to Praetor. This is accomplished in the Microsoft Exchange Admin program under the Internet Mail Service Tab called Connections.
